Juniors and Cadets
Junior and Cadet Program
The Tasmania Fire Service Junior and Cadet Program (JCP) is a free youth development program for children and young people aged 10 – 14 (Juniors) and 15 – 17 (Cadets).
Junior and Cadet members participate in fun and exciting training activities in a supervised and safe environment. Through participation in the JCP, children and young people can gain:
- – Knowledge and practical skills in emergency and natural disaster prevention, preparedness and response
- – Skills in teamwork, leadership, communication and problem solving
- – Friendships with like-minded peers
- – Self-confidence
- – A sense of belonging to their local community and participating in community life.
The knowledge, skills and experiences gained through participation in a JCP set children and young people up for success as they mature. Tasmania Fire Service Cadets have been able to draw on their experiences of the program to strengthen their resumés and tertiary study applications. Many graduates of the JCP have gone on to become Tasmania Fire Service volunteers or employees, or to pursue rewarding careers in emergency management.
The JCP is facilitated by Tasmania Fire Service volunteer fire brigades. Junior and Cadet members are supervised by JCP Coordinators (adult volunteer brigade members), who plan, organise and run the program, with support from the brigade’s leadership team and other members.

Not all volunteer brigades host a Junior and Cadet Program –
