Pilot Fuel Break Grants Program

Pilot Fuel Break Grants Program

About the Program

The Pilot Fuel Break Grants Program supports Tasmanian councils to implement or upgrade fuel breaks in the urban–rural interface.

Applications for the Pilot Program have now closed. Assessment outcomes will be communicated directly to applicants.

For further details on fuel breaks, refer to the Tasmanian Fire Service Fuel Break Guidelines.

Purpose of the program

  • Reduce bushfire risk in Tasmania’s highest-risk communities through strategic fuel breaks in the urban–rural interface.
  • Improving access to support preparedness activities such as bushfire hazard monitoring, planned burning, and mechanical fuel treatments.
  • Improve building dependability by reducing radiant heat and ember attack during bushfire events.
  • Provide tactical advantage for emergency response operations such as backburning and direct attack.
  • Support firefighter safety and community protection by creating accessible, well-designed breaks that integrate with broader bushfire mitigation strategies.

Tasmanian councils (as defined under the Local Government Act 1993) may deliver works on behalf of other landowners and are responsible for negotiating and documenting ongoing maintenance.
