The Tasmania Fire Service recognises that exceptional circumstances may occasionally contribute to a false fire alarm activation despite reasonable efforts being taken to maintain and manage a fire alarm system.

This application process allows building owners to request a review of a false fire alarm charge where they believe circumstances exist that warrant consideration of a waiver.

The waiver process is intended to provide an opportunity for applicants to explain the circumstances surrounding an alarm activation, outline actions taken to address the cause, and provide any supporting information relevant to the assessment. Submission of an application does not guarantee that a charge will be waived, and each application is assessed on its individual merits.

Circumstances That May Be Considered

When assessing an application, consideration may be given to factors including:

  • The circumstances that contributed to the alarm activation.
  • Whether reasonable steps had been taken to maintain and manage the fire alarm system.
  • Evidence that corrective actions have been implemented to prevent recurrence.
  • Unforeseen events or factors that were outside the reasonable control of the owner or occupant.
  • Information provided by maintenance contractors or other qualified professionals.
  • Supporting documentation submitted as part of the application.

Applicants should provide as much information as possible to assist with the assessment process.
