Volunteer Training
As a volunteer, we support you to learn at your own pace and reasonable assistance is provided where necessary to accommodate special needs (including language, literacy and numeracy support). In some cases we are able recognise prior learning with other training organisations, and offer credit transfer, where applicable.
If you’re training to be a volunteer, your information and theory sessions will normally be run indoors.
Practical skills sessions are delivered in a safe and realistic environment, including in the outdoors, and using equipment, appliances (trucks!) and procedures that are identical to those you’ll use when responding to a job.
As a key measure, we ensure our volunteers are equipped with the skills and knowledge to
complete any task in a safe and capable manner.
Training is delivered in a blended manner, both in person and online.
Initial induction and basic fire fighting awareness is conducted at the fire brigade you are allocated to, followed by more formative training in the operation of fire fighting pumps, bush firefighting skills, and skills and tactics to be able respond to motor vehicle accidents and fires.
This process typically takes around 12 months on average, with adequate opportunities to consolidate and advance your learnings.
