Brigades and Volunteers
Career and Volunteer Brigades are integral to the delivery of the Fuel Reduction Program and will be engaged with at a community level in their local areas.
The Tasmania Fire Service relies on volunteer brigades to conduct firefighting tasks and will not rely on them for implementing the Fuel Reduction Program.
Other Agencies
Sustainable Timber Tasmania
Sustainable Timber Tasmania (STT) is responsible for managing approximately 800,000 hectares of Permanent Timber Production Zone land throughout the state. This also includes the management of bushfires on their land by:
- Control of unplanned bushfires
- Conducting planned burns to improve the safety of communities by reducing fuel loads in production forests and other identified high priority areas
- Regenerating harvested forests in a similar manner to natural regeneration following bushfire
STT conduct fuel reduction burns on land that they manage and also provide crews to conduct and assist Fuel Reduction Program burns on private land.
Parks and Wildlife Service Tasmania
Parks and Wildlife Service is the managing authority of Tasmania's reserve system and seeks to conserve the State's natural and cultural heritage while providing for sustainable use and economic opportunities for the community.
Parks and Wildlife Service is responsible for the management of bushfires on all reserved and crown land in Tasmania. This management includes:
- Control of unplanned bushfires;
- Planned burning to reduce fuel loads and make fire control easier and safer;
- Planned burning to help maintain biodiversity, promote regeneration of plants that depend on fire and to maintain suitable habitat for animals;
- Maintaining assets that assist with bushfire control, for example, fire trails, firebreaks and waterholes.
